Day Off...

Today is my day off.
And since the past two weeks (really the past month) of my life have been utterly consumed by Cinderella it's left little time for me to be Cinderella... You know the song... "Cinderelly, Cinderelly night and day it's "Cinderelly." Make the fire, fix the breakfast, wash the dishes, do the moppin'... And the sweepin' and the distin' they always keep her hoppin'."
So day off = Cleaning day.
Ugghhh... Maybe if I whistle it would help. Maybe if I could whistle it would help.
Oh if only life were a Disney movie. Then I'd have cute little birdies, mice, chipmunks... even a deer or two to help me. And boy are they ever cute! Watch this clip and you'll see what I mean. I think the squirrels are my favorite. Ha... I think I clean like a squirrel.

But on second thought, this in real life would look more like the following clip (forgive the japanese subtitles...) than the one above. And I'm sorry but having pigeons flying around in my place would be so horrifically terrifying (not to mention absurd) that I think I'd rather used the magic wand of Clorox than animal labor. Bummer. Well looks like I'd better learn to whistle soon...

A dream is a wish your heart makes...

Do you know this tune?
A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you will lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling thru
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
the dream that you wish will come true
Although this wasn't my favorite song in this animated classic, it was and is and will always be my favorite Disney movie. Any guesses? Maybe this will spark your memory:

Surprise, surprise! Cinderella of course! If only I were that chipper in the morning. Maybe if I lived in a sweet tower and had birds and mice attending me... Then again, the thought of real birds flying around in my room gives me a mini panic attack. Seriously.

But is a dream a wish your heart makes when you're fast asleep? I don't know about you but I hardly ever remember my dreams. And yet I'm probably one of the biggest daydreamers I know - I mean I didn't get the nickname "Spacey" as a kid 'cause I wanted to be an astronaut... Nope. I dreamed that I'd be a ballerina. But in pursuing this dream, I didn't "lose [my] heartache," as the song says...
Year after year I'd audition for Nutcracker, and year after year I'd scan down the casting list, no "Anspach" to be found. But hope is strong in little hearts and dreams, persevering.
I was 9 and the year was 1994. My mom and I went to see my friends (and classmates) Kira Elste, Katie Lindstrom and Justine Sheedy perform in a ballet that once again I desperately wished I was a part of. Kira and Katie were Memory Children (Kira got to swing on a swing onstage - how cool is that?!!!) and Justine was a pumpkin. The ballet: Kent Stowell's Cinderella.
And as excited as I was to see my friends dance onstage, I was utterly mesmerized as the curtain rose to reveal the exquisite ballroom scene of the 2nd Act - the women dressed in these exquisite red tulle creations dancing with their handsome partners.
Just hours before I'd wanted to be a pumpkin, or even swing on a swing, but in that moment I dreamed of the day when I'd get to wear that red waltz dress and tiara and dance to that magical music.

Busted, bad-quality bathroom shot.
But at least you get the idea...
Well, today was the day. The dream that I wished did come true. It's been 17 years in the making but patience is a virtue, right? Well at the very least it's fruit the Lord's been cultivating in me.

So what happens when the dream comes true? Well you get a new one! And oh I have so many...
But this Cinderella ballet of "dreams-come-true"... well, it kind of inspires/perpetuates this habit of mine - dreaming that is.
So what's the wish my heart's making right now? It's a big wish. It's a big hope - almost as big as becoming a ballerina. But dare I speak it? Is Cinderella right? If I tell you will it not come true? Maybe if my faith is based on my dream and not on the One who gives it to me in the first place.
"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still and wait patiently for him;" ~ Psalm 37:4-7.
So I delight myself in the Lord. My hope and trust are found in Him alone, and I have faith in the Author of my dreams. Cause after all, "nothing is impossible with God."
And lastly, (often the hardest part of all) I ask... I ask Him someday that I might get to trade in my red tutu for a white one, my plain pink pointe shoes for beautiful bedazzled ones and that His righteousness in me would shine like the dawn. But in the meantime, while I wait patiently for Him, I praise and thank Him for the dreams that have come true. And I waltz in red.

If you haven't bought your tickets yet for Cinderella do it now! They're going fast and the clock's already rung once... 9 more shows before the magic and the beauty vanish (but hopefully not forever!). To buy them click here.
And if you have a dream - you keep on dreaming, and don't be afraid to ask. Trust the Lord! He'll work it out for your good and His glory!

Footage of my life

Was it only 10 days ago that I posted an update to this blog? Ha! Only...
"Only" is kind of unacceptable. And yet the past 10 days have seemed an eternity longer than the 240 hours that they've actually been.

So... "Footage of my life", huh?
Well if I were really being clever this post would be about caring for my disgusting feet, or explaining the mystery that are pointe shoes etc. - you know... something podiatric in nature. And, well, I guess in a very small way it does center around that- a shoe... a missing shoe. A missing slipper. A glass slipper. That's right folks... Cinderella! It's that time...

Kent Stowell's Cinderella. Photo © Angela Sterling.
Fortunately for me the clock has not yet struck 12 - the dream it is to dance this ballet has not yet vanished. But we're now past the "just begun" stage and into "full swing" mode. My body is aching from the long six-hour rehearsal days I'm putting in, and my head is spinning from all the new choreography I'm trying to cram into my brain. And when I come home at night after eating dinner and some ibuprofen what do I do? I lay in bed, computer on my lap and I watch Cindy study tapes - with 6 different parts (two of which I asked to learn) it's easy for me to get counts and steps confused. I live, eat and breathe Cinderella. But I wouldn't have it any other way... I mean it's dancing people!!! Not only that, but it's Kent Stowell choreography, Prokofiev music and, well, it's Cinderella - every little girls dream, and the best fairy tale of all.
And as I get ready in the morning, ready to begin again, I practice my faces in the bathroom mirror. "Faces?" you might ask... Ha ha!!! Watch this YouTube video and you'll understand.

There's so much more to say about this beautiful ballet, but according to Pacific Standard Time the clock struck 12 long ago and this little step-sis must be getting some rest. So that's all for now... To buy your tickets to this exquisite, sometimes comical, but always magical production click here. But you'd better hurry - it's one you won't want to miss!

Resolutions

Well Happy (much belated) New Year!

It's now January 9th, and I'm laying here in bed still dressed in my "Sunday best" (which really doesn't signify much since I practically wear my "Sunday best" every day), tucked under my down-comforter as I write this and watch the slush fall. It's cold out and I feel crummy. But somehow on a Sunday it kind of feels good to just snuggle up and do as little as possible.
And yet here I am writing.
Oddly enough, it takes a "sick day" for me to buckle down and just write this post. Maybe it's because what I'm going to write about is something I dread... something I kind of despise.

New Years Resolutions.

To be honest, I don't know why I dislike them so much. I mean I am a total Type A, driven, goal-oriented person. You'd think that New Years Resolutions would be my thing... that the entire month of December I'd be evaluating and analyzing 2010 for it's short-comings and "needs improvement" areas and I'd have my list all written out and ready to go come January 1st. And this assumption wouldn't be entirely off base - I am, after all, my father's daughter.
But what does "resolution" actually mean?

I looked it up online and found 6 different definitions along with their various permutations. My favorites (being a secret math/science geek) are:
"1 g: the analysis of a vector into two or more vectors of which it is the sum."
" 2 : the subsidence of a pathological state (as inflammation)."
Of course these aren't the ones that have to do with New Years. "Something that is resolved, or firmness and fixity of purpose."
But are these resolutions people make really fixed?
Me thinks they're a fad. They're a roller coaster. These "resolutions" raise you high with a sense of hope and expectation, but weeks or months later leave you down in the depths of despair. New Years has become like Valentines Day - an overly commercialize holiday that in the end only makes people feel worse.

Cynical? Pessimistic? Sure sounds like it...
But in truth, this ranting and raving comes not from a pessimistic heart that believes people are "as is", and a cynical attitude toward hope and life. On the contrary, the reason I so dislike resolutions is because I do believe people can change. I know it. I've experienced it. I've changed.
But change is hard. Really hard. Much harder than writing something down on a piece of paper like "drink 8 glasses of water a day," or "lose 10lbs." or "quit smoking." And it's much harder than the latest diet, supplement or media-endorsed fad would like you to believe.
Change - it requires time and an endless supply of patience, perseverance, endurance and grace. It requires the power of Christ. But how often do we want the "quick-fix"? I find I can be so results-oriented. I want instant-gratification. I'll push so hard in my own strength only to fall flat on my face - my pride wounded (not necessarily a bad thing) and my heart hurting.
And yet like fine wine, or even just a really good stew, some of the greatest changes I've made and blessings I've received are those that require me to wait, require me to persevere and cause me to grow.

I want people to grow, not groan from falling on their face. I want people to be renewed and restored. I want people to be full of true hope, and not false expectations. I want "fixity of purpose" not fad.

So 2011... I resolve to make no resolutions, but only to work toward and focus on these three things:

  1. Give the Lord my first fruits... in everything.
  2. To really see people.
  3. To really need people.
So what are your non-resolutions for 2011? I have a feeling it's going to be a very exciting year full of change... change for good.

Post 59

So I know... I'm crazy.
But I just really like odd numbers and I'd like to end 2010 on 59 not 58.
Odd? Why yes I am! Thank you!

And well, this video is pretty amazing.
My dear sweet brother Barret went back to NYC today and I miss him already. And last night we created a memory that I'll never forget.

So we watched the movie, Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky - a cinematically stunning french film about?     ha ha... I'll let you guess... Needless to say it was inspirational visually and musically- which brings me to the purpose behind this post.

In the film they use one of Stravinsky's Five Easy Pieces for Piano four hands as part of their soundtrack. And my brother and I, being Stravinsky enthusiasts, decided to try our four hands at it. Easy pieces? Unfortunately not so for me... my two hands found it a bit troublesome. And being the perfectionist that I am, I made my brother play it over and over again till we got it right (which never actually happened...). We decided to record it on his computer, but his computer also served as our sheet music (he found it on the internet) leaving us with a very funny video. So below is the end result of the 5 or 6 different attempts at the Andante of the Five Easy Pieces. Barret, being Mr. Funny Man, decided to speed it up and, well it had us in stitches all night. I hope you get a laugh out of it as well.
At any rate, just getting to sit down and play with my brother was the best gift of all! A memory I'll cherish forever.

So Happy New Years Eve. I hope your year has been full of as many wonderful memories as this one!

26

26 – Blessings, Lessons and Occurrences of 2010.

1. Jesus Christ. My Lord. My Savior. My Strength and Shield. My VERY GREAT REWARD. My all.
2. Learned the hard lesson of confidence through dancing the Fairy of Wit in The Sleeping Beauty
3. Began this blog, and through it met a new friend, Janet Richardson, who blesses my socks off!
4. Danced 2 shows of Vespers – a mighty prayer woman am I… on and off stage!
5. Dr. Patrick Donovan. The best naturopath who makes me laugh and takes great care of me.
6. Bible Study Fellowship. The most faithful leaders, challenging lessons, enriching groups and Spirit-led lectures. Need I say more?
7. John (the Gospel) – for helping me understand the depth and enormity of God’s love.
8. Opened my heart more fully to receiving and feeling God’s love for me. Thank you Captivating!
9. Kjirsten Davies. This woman’s poured herself and Christ’s love into me – the best mentor a girl could EVER ask for.
10. Came down with stomach flu the Monday of opening week for our All Balanchine Rep (missing dress rehearsal), but miraculously recovered to dance Serenade, Square Dance and The 4 Temperaments by the Saturday matinee show.
11. Packed up our family home of 23 years (almost single-handedly) in two weeks, while my parents remodeled our current home.
12. Saw my baby brother Barret graduate from Juilliard with a MM in Composition. I’m so proud!
13. Performed in the main Opera House at the Kennedy Center in Benjamin Millipied’s 3 Movements for Ballet Across America II and had my brother there to watch.
14. Danced one of the four “Russian Girls” in Serenade at 9,000 ft without collapsing – on tour to Vail, CO whilst very sick. Also busted out some “Cool” too.
15. New friendships with kindred spirits. Deeper friendships with co-workers.
16. Crossed off a “first.”
17. Saw the first piece an old summer program pal of mine, Aaron Thayer staged for Spectrum Dance Theater. A surreal experience to be sure!
18. Learned to see life as The Adventures of Jesus and Jessika – and in that order too.
19. I’ve come to embrace (and even be excited for…) the adventure, the unknown- not needing to know all, but finding myself content to just be.
20. In the last 3 months I’ve somehow managed to be in multiple forms of print… photos, reviews, calendars, and had my first article published in Dance Magazine's December issue. Baffled? Quite. Humbled? Absolutely!
21. My family. I am blessed beyond measure to have them in my life and to see how Christ is transforming each of them. So cool!
22. Living at home. Yes… this is a HUGE blessing. My parents are the best! I love them so much.
23. Conquered fears. Learned to ask and trust the Lord to work it out.
24. Got to perform Peacock on the last show of a very successful Nutcracker season.
25. Came to the realization that every person’s story is important because every person IS important, unique and special… and that includes me. This is hard for me to accept but helps me to see why I keep this blog. Why I write.
26. I turned 26.

And my prayer is that this coming year, this 26th year of my life, is just as full (if not more so) of miracles, blessings, challenges, lessons, praises and joy as this past one has been. So here’s to 2011 and all it may bring.
But here’s to GOD the Author of all. To Him ALONE be the glory, honor and praise!

Thank you to those of you who have been so encouraging this past year. It has been full. And I am blessed. I hope you’ve been too.

Happy (almost) New Year!

Disoriented in December

Can someone please tell me what day it is? Someone? Anyone? No seriously...

I woke up this morning and had absolutely no clue what the date was, what day it was or what time it was. Apparently I'd left my cell phone (a.k.a. my alarm clock) at the theater the night before, since not a peep was heard, not even its disturbingly obnoxious beeping sound.

And on driving home this evening I realized that the same thing has happened yet again.
"Cell phone? Where areee youuuuu?" I guess it decided to stay home...
But home these days is not the place where I sleep, the address that's on all my paychecks- the place that's generally considered "home." Nope.

These days I live in the realm, the alternate universe of Nutcracker. My home: the theater, a.k.a. Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. In this place date, time, day, night... they don't exist. Much like the movie Groundhog Day, every day is Christmas Eve... and Clara's getting a new Nutcracker.
I measure time by half-hour calls and massage/physical therapist arrival times. And meals? Forget it! I've flat-out stopped trying to label them "breakfast", "lunch" or "dinner"... I mean can you really call it lunch when you're eating it at 4:30/5pm? And can you really call it dinner when it's a big bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats at 10:30/11pm?

In the morning I arrive at the theater, take class, put makeup on my dried-out/breaking-out face (this seems oxymoronic, and yet my face proves that it is possible), dance and then do it all over again for the evening show... Between shows I'll go out to get some food and fresh air, but by this time it's already dark out. Returning back to the Black Hole (my other name for the theater) I'll eat, and then mess around either studying, embroidering cards, or practicing a variation till the therapist arrives or it's just time to begin again. Monotonous? A little. But I like predictability and stability... and did I forget to mention all the dancing and performing I get to do? Yeah, I definitely love that part of it. And besides, I have 11 different parts that break up the monotony and keep me on my toes... (okay really bad pun, but I just had to...)

Living in Nutcracker land is okay with me during the month of December, but problems arise when I have to re-enter the real world.... when lunch is at noon and dinner's at 7pm; when I have to be at work by 10am but had a show that ended at 10pm the night before. Sleepless in Seattle? Sort of. Disoriented in December? Definitely!

Well, to get a glimpse of my life in Nutcracker land, watch this great little video the very talented Lindsay Thomas created for PNB's youtube channel. And to experience the magic, buy your tickets here. We still have a week of shows left (including the always hilarious "Nutty" Nutcracker show at 4pm on Christmas Eve) and guess who gets to close this run of Nutcracker as the Peacock? Me, that's who!

And to you all out there: May the Lord bless you with the gift of His peace, rest and joy as you celebrate His birth - the greatest gift of all!  Merry Christmas!
